Beach House are one of the only non-pop bands Thom will put up with (lol), so I’ve been listening to them a lot lately. I think Walk In The Park is one of the best songs from Teen Dream, the lyrics really get to me.

P.S - was just poking around their website and apparently you can download some of their songs for free, so here’s the link in case you don’t like buying CDs and/or are morally opposed to torrenting… Beach House Music

LANEWAY FESTIVAL

Here’s the overdue Laneway post you wanted F4!

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

1) Warpaint

First up on the lineup was Warpaint, a band I wasn’t too familiar with except some of their songs like Undertow (which is a great song)

Theresa Wayman of Warpaint, who I think I’m developing a girl crush on (sorry wifey) after seeing her perform! Love her hair.

—These photos are taken by Charlyn, a photographer for the Ridge before I took over her media pass.

Emily Kokal.

Stella Mozgawa was brilliant on drums, and during Warpaint’s set Stella and Theresa would switch around with Theresa on drums.

After that seeing Warpaint live, I think I’m going to give their album The Fool another listen.

-

2) Up next was Ladyhawke, which I didn’t stay in the pit for because I am not into her songs too much.

Instead I borrowed a media pass off a Ridge writer and met Deerhunter!

Lockett Pundt and Bradford Cox posing for media photos - Bradford thought he would do something different and decided to wear his poncho over his head, sunglasses over that and pose with evil hands hahaha

Bradford is a pretty quirky character, during the interview he told us about his love for orchids and how bummed he was that he couldn’t visit the Botanical Gardens because it rained the day before.

-

3) Beach House

After visiting the media tent I ran back out to catch Beach House

Victoria Legrand in an awesome mint coloured jacket

Beach House’s set was nothing short of amazing, as expected. They performed with these spinning diamond-shaped glitter things on stage, and Victoria kept swishing her pretty hair about to the beat, awesome.

-

4) Deerhunter

By 6pm the writer and photographer for the Ridge left, because they weren’t into the music much and didn’t want to suffer through the rain for another 7 hours (it poured the whole day!), so I took over their media passes.

Charlyn, the photographer lent me her Nikon D90 and I got access to the photo pit for the rest of the night.

It’s incredible being up in the photo pit, the speakers are about right next to you and are so loud that your clothes are sent flying hehe

Deerhunter’s set was amazing as well, wish they would come back and do a solo concert of their own in the Esplanade! I expected nothing less though, Karen O after all describes their concerts as a “religious experience” and is a fan of them.

Bradford started off with a loud bang, a combination of his guitar and singing, and it was surprising seeing how thin this man is in real life. The rest of the set consisted mainly of songs of Halcyon Digest, their latest album.

5) Media Tent: Yeasayer

After Deerhunter’s set I ran back into the media tent, bringing Ying with me to meet Yeasayer

They were definitely the one of the friendliest band I’ve ever met, talking to us the whole time about the Nikon camera I was holding, and even picked up my phone to show how this one interviewer from the BBC had fake pockets on her skirt.

When asked about how it was performing in Singapore for the first time, they said that cities like this are usually the best to perform in, because in New York and London the crowd tend to think themselves as “too cool” as they are used to having so many concerts all the time.

Ying and I with Yeasayer, with me looking absolutely ridiculous half wet and with a poncho stuffed in my pocket.

-

6) Media Tent: Foals

Couldn’t hear much during the interview with Foals, it was raining so hard on the tent and !!! was on stage.

Yannis was sick with a sore throat, so it made it even harder to hear him. Though in a true badass musician style he smoked throughout the interview.

-

7) Yeasayer

Yeasayer had sweet harmonies throughout the set, and played Tightrope!

On O.N.E. Anand sang the lead, and Chris was spot on for all the songs.

Ahh what an awesome set, it was way too short though.

-

8) Media Tent: Temper Trap

Laneway Singapore was their last show of the tour with Conditions, the next day they were flying straight back to London to start recording their second album.

-

9) Foals

Yannis

Jimmy Smith

One of the best sets of the day, it rained the hardest during their set too but no one in the crowd left and braved the insane weather and mud.

Yannis sang perfectly despite his sore throat, and when Balloons came on the crowd went insane. They brought in special black balloons for Foals, but by a few songs in the balloons all ended up in the photo pit, so I picked them all up and threw it back into the crowd.

Yannis went into the crowd at one point, wished I was there at the front! The one downside to photo pit access is that you have to be on the side of the crowd to run in and out during sets, as you are only allowed in for the first three songs.

Also during Foals some chick sitting on a guy’s shoulders flashed the crowd, which was hilarious because the camera was on her (and projected on the big screen) at one point, but upon realising that her white shirt was see-through and her bra was falling off quickly turned away.

-

10) Temper Trap

Dougy

The last and headlining act for Laneway!

Dougy sang with a sweet falsetto, and overall the set was great except they shouldn’t have played Drum Song as it dragged on too long live (not a huge fan of the song on the album either). However they ended with Laneway with Sweet Disposition and it was perfect! Dougy jumped into the crowd as well and it was awesome.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Overall it was an amazing day, I LOVE MUSIC FESTIVALS! Would definitely love to go for Glastonbury or Coachella one day.

Everyone was into the music despite the terrible (or amazing) weather, danced around with strangers and frolicked about in the mud (saw people mud wrestling and skipping in a circle).

The Box  - Johnny Flynn

Heard this in the Felix office a few times over the last few weeks and now it’s stuck in my head. Quite like this and Tickle Me Pink (:

Feels like so much has happened over the last week! Where to start..

Last night was a funny night. Went to this club called the Den just off Tottenham Court Road for Diogo’s birthday. Was a really cool place, cheap drinks and good music. They played All is Love by Karen O and the Kids!! (I wonder if Diogo remembers dancing to this :P) They also played the A-trak remix of Heads Will Roll and a good remix of Stylo.

Saw Beach House and Grizzly Bear on Sunday with J-P. I went there expecting to prefer Beach House but was surprised to find that Grizzly Bear were amazing live. The lead singer of Grizzly Bear looked wasted but was quite amusing; he was like ‘we really like being in London, but we even more like being in London with Beach House’ heh. I was also impressed with how talented the members of Grizzly Bear were; Chris Taylor (blonde one) switched between playing bass, saxophone, clarinet and I think an accordion at some point. They played all their standard songs (opened with Southern Point then played Cheerleader; played Two Weeks and had Victoria Legrand come on to do backing vocals for that). They also played Slow Life (from the New Moon soundtrack) with Victoria Legrand and Deep Blue Sea (Daniel Rossen [main guitarist] did vocals for this! he was amazing). The harmonies in the chorus of While You Wait for the Others were soo good too, was just really impressed overall (:

What else? I wrote my last lab report for the term yesterday! So so glad I’m done with those. Also had a chemistry test that went quite well I think. So glad I’ve finished all my coursework for this term. Can just chill out for the next two weeks/prepare for Morocco now (:
